COLORADO SPRINGS- Just in time for Earth Day on Monday, hundreds made their way out to Garden of the Gods Saturday morning for a rare event.

In its third installment, the park only opened to walkers and cyclists.

All vehicles parked outside the park at Rock Ledge Ranch, to experience the park in a different way.

For some tourists, it was their first experience of the park, without the usual traffic.

“It’s very scenic, relaxing, I guess it’s a nice escape from the city for people who live around here,” said Julia Sowa, who visited the park Saturday morning with her dad.

One group that caught the attention of people in the park was a roller derby team from Denver, the “Rocky Mountain Rollerpunks.”

Jamie Leavitt says they came down from the capital city to have some team bonding with the nice weather.

Leavitt and her fellow roller derby teammates skated throughout the park Saturday morning.

“So nice not having to watch out for cars,” said Leavitt, “in the city, you really have to watch ’cause they’ll just run you over.”

Other events took place at the Garden of the Gods visitor center in anticipation of Earth Day Monday.
