CAÑON CITY – A spokesperson from the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District said a vacant motel sustained heavy damage from a fire early Monday morning.

Crews were dispatched to the corner of 3rd Street and Royal Gorge Boulevard around 12:20 a.m. Monday, where they found the building was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters had to take a defensive approach to fight the fire, which also caused power to be knocked out to a significant number of people in town overnight. As of 3 a.m., electricity was restored to all customers in Canon City, except for the structure that burned.

Royal Gorge Boulevard, 1st Street, 2nd Street, 3rd Street and 4th Street were shut down for several hours overnight, but all streets are back open in the area.

Firefighters reported no one was hurt from the fire, and investigators will work to determine a cause later this morning, once firefighters can determine if the building is stable enough for crews to work inside.
