SOUTHERN COLORADO – League play begins tonight – what a night!

And what’s better about a big-time league matchup (that determines if you’re going to the playoffs and boosts your RPI) than a rivalry game!?

One of the biggest kicks off Friday night in Pueblo.

GAME OF THE WEEK – Pueblo South (1-4) vs. Pueblo East (3-2):

These two teams are struggling right now in two different ways. The Eagles began 3-0 and looked like the odds-on favorites for the 3A state title until they hit a skid. falling in back to back weeks to Pueblo West and Discovery Canyon. Now the Eagles and their high-powered offense need retooling headed into league play. The Colts are the defending 4A champs but began the season 1-4, so……. FIRE UP THE CANNON TO CHANGE THINGS!!! This is one of the biggest rivalries in the state (2nd in Pueblo) and it comes at a good time for both teams to reboot themselves and make a postseason push. Emotions will run high, the team that makes the fewest mistakes will come out on top and let the cannon boom their respective color.

La Junta (5-0) vs. Elizabeth (3-2):

Could this be the first real challenge for the Tigers? La Junta has looked like the favorite to win the 2A title 2nd in 3 years) but could get a real fight on Friday against the Cardinals. They’ve won three in a row and scored 113 points in those wins (giving up 12 points) – and two of those games were on the road.

Thomas Jefferson (5-0) vs. Lewis-Palmer (3-2):

Good chance for an upset and a great home win? The Rangers could kill two birds with one stone on Friday night. LP is 2-0 so far at Don Breese Stadium and has a chance at a third win if they can slow down TJ. The Spartans are coming off their best win of the season, but things change in league play.

Pueblo Central (4-1) vs. Pueblo County (2-3):

The South Central League might be the most competitive league in the state and the Wildcats are standing atop it right now. Central is having their best season in… a long time (we don’t have records that go that far back) and it’s going to make the Bell Game competitive for the first time in… a long time. County stands in their way of a 5-1 start and a big lead on the SCL Standings.

Grand Junction Central (3-2) vs. Vista Ridge (2-3):

One win can flip things around for either team in the 4A Southern League 1 race. Both teams trail Pine Creek (and the Eagles get an automatic win with Cheyenne Mountain forfeiting their game on Saturday) but Vista Ridge can jump in front of Mesa Ridge if they get a home win Friday night. The Wolves are losing by an average of 17 points a game, only winning by an average of 10, so a win for VR is going to be hard fought and well earned.
