Georgia deputy shot and killed while chasing burglary suspects

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A Georgia sheriff's deputy was shot and killed late Sunday night while chasing burglary suspects in Gainesville, Ga.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook Monday morning that one of its deputies was shot while running after several suspects after they crashed their car following a pursuit.

According to the Facebook page, the deputy and one of the suspects exchanged gunfire. The deputy died from his injuries at an area hospital. The suspect was also injured. His condition is unknown at this time. Authorities are not releasing the deputy's name, pending family notification of his death.

Authorities said they believe the man shot by the deputy was the suspected shooter. Law enforcement from multiple agencies are still searching for the other suspects, who are considered armed and dangerous.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting. Gainesville is about an hour northeast of Atlanta.
