CENTRAL SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) — Nancy Lewis Park was the setting for Kingdom Builder's Family Life Center's annual "Community Unites Against Violence" 5K walk and run Saturday, an event aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault.
Other organizations joined the event to share resources about health, wellness, and healing.
One participant, Dr. Atiya K. Senegal, says she took part in the walk as a reminder of the healing she has experienced since leaving her marriage.
"We fled from one state to another to get away from an unhealthy situation. I left everything behind and I managed to get my business stuff in storage and then I was able to go back to get that so that I can get rebuilding my life," Senegal said.
Senegal says Kingdom Builder's helped her find an apartment and navigate the process of starting over.
"It was still stressful. It was still overwhelming because when you leave everything behind and you rebuild your life, it doesn't matter what your education is, it doesn't matter what your background is, things happen in life. Life happens," Senegal said.
The process as long, but rewarding.
"I was able to get into a hotel for like 28 days and for 10 days Kingdom Builders paid for my hotel room. And then after that they were able to pay the first month's rent and deposit for my son to get into his apartment because he has disability, so he got in his apartment and then they offered me safe housing for six weeks and then they advocated for me to get into apartments and I finally got into my own apartment on June 5th," Senegal said.
