PUEBLO WEST — The Pueblo West Fire Department is going back to voters with an effort to improve safety.

The department wants to put a one percent sales tax measure on November's ballot.

If approved, the money will go toward trying to improve response times by building a new fire station, hiring more firefighters, and other upgrades.

A similar tax failed last year, so firefighters are putting new effort into this measure.

"We will have town hall meetings going forward for the rest of the year up until the election to help educate the community and let everybody know what this is for and what we are trying to accomplish," said firefighter and paramedic Ross Gallegos.

The Pueblo West Metro District has to vote to put the measure on the ballot. That vote is expected to happen Monday.
