COLORADO SPRINGS — A large investigation scene is taped off at the north end of Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs. Hikers found human bones just off a trail in thick brush.

A News5 viewer shared photos of the investigators at work just off of Fontanero Street.

"We have confirmed they are human skeletal remains” said Lt. Jim Sokolik with the Colorado Springs Police Department. “So now it's a matter of processing the scene, really determining the circumstance of how those remains came to be there."

Colorado Springs investigators, the El Paso County Coroner, and investigators with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are all working together.

"We don't know that we have a crime scene, but we're going to use all our resources to determine what occurred," Sokolik said.

Lab work will offer information to determine if this is a crime scene.

"Really this is now up to the forensic sciences to figure out, what we don't know--to figure out how those got here, how long they've been here," Sokolik said.

In the meantime, the scene has to be thoroughly processed. If it's determined to be a crime, the time to gather evidence is now.
