BENT COUNTY – There is good news to report on the grass fire burning near Las Animas.

Saturday afternoon, fire bosses reported 50 percent containment on the so-called Black Bridge Fire that is burning between Las Animas and Fort Lyon, in Bent County.

The Hasty/McClave Volunteer Fire Department, which is one of the many agencies involved in the fight, posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon that the fire has burned more than 1,400 acres. Just before 1 p.m. they also said crews had contained half the fire and all evacuations have been lifted.

Friday afternoon, firefighters took their defenses to the skies.

“The governor had offered air support already,” said Rick Stwalley, Bent County Emergency Manager. “So, the state is involved. Air resources are en route.”

Crews from Las Animas, La Junta, Hasty, McClave, Cheraw, and Kiowa Counties have all helped try to douse the flames.

There is still no word on what sparked the fire.
