COLORADO – The Colorado Department of Transportation is changing up the way it handles avalanche mitigation.

The agency is using a new device that triggers remotely, causing explosions to get rid of any avalanche danger that may be present.

CDOT said the devices can be left in place all season.

The new system will reduce road closures to just about 20 minutes and can also take place during the night to minimize impacts on drivers.
