COLORADO SPRINGS – Police said a man is dead following an auto-pedestrian crash Thursday night in Colorado Springs.

CSPD’s preliminary investigation showed that a vehicle traveling south on N. Circle Drive hit a person walking through the intersection of E. Uintah Street a little before 8 p.m. Thursday night.

61-year-old Dennis D. Eastom of Colorado Springs was near a marked crosswalk, but was crossing against a green light which the driver had at the time, according to police.  Investigators found one driver swerved to avoid Eastom but the second was unable to avoid a collision.

Colorado Springs Police said the pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

N. Circle was closed for hours while CSPD’s Major Accident Unit investigated the accident. Police said their investigation showed the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police said they also don’t believe the driver was speeding at the time of the crash.

Mr. Eastom’s death is the 48th related traffic fatality of the year. He’s the 13th pedestrian struck and killed in traffic.
