WESTMINSTER — Friday Centura Health celebrated the 500th COVID-19 patient discharged from the healthcare system statewide.

Hospital workers at St. Anthony North Health Campus in Westminster cheered on Jose Diaz, 42, as he left after 40 days in the hospital's ICU.

Centura said Diaz when Diaz was admitted April 5 he was not expected to survive the disease and had Do Not Resuscitate orders in effect.

Diaz was one of the first Centura Health patients to receive convalescent plasma as a treatment for COVID-19 and is now expected to make a full recovery.

“I am just thankful for this hospital; the people here have saved my life. If it wasn’t for the staff here, I wouldn’t have survived. Against all odds I’m here,” said Diaz.

He was transferred to a care facility to continue his recovery until he is able to return home.

Centura Health cheers every COVID-19 patient that is discharged.

To mark the 500th discharge the hospital provided a special Centura Health blanket and caregivers lined the hallways holding sings, playing music, and honoring Diaz.
