SMITH ISLAND, WA – The U.S. Coast Guard rescued dozens of people in Washington State Thursday after a whale-watching boat hit a submerged rock and took on water.

According to the Coast Guard the vessel was Canadian, but the incident occurred in U.S. Waters near Smith Island.

To keep the boat from sinking the boat’s Captain beached it on the island and called for help. The Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and two vessels.

The catamaran was grounded in very shallow water, so smaller good Samaritan vessels ferried the passengers to the Coast Guard boats.

No serious injuries were reported.

The tour company sent more vessels to take the passengers back to Victoria, British Columbia.
