WASHINGTON – Today we could see signs of the first steps toward re-opening the government.
President Trump is promising a “major announcement” this afternoon concerning the shutdown and funding for the border wall.
It is still unclear whether these developments will represent serious steps toward resolving the merry-go-round between Republicans and Democrats or if the announcement is simply political posturing as the shutdown stretches into its 29th day.
The White House has declined to leak any details about what the president will discuss in his announcement. Two people familiar with the planning say Trump is not expected to declare a national emergency which he has said was one option to surpass Congress.
However, the president is expected to propose an outline of a deal that the Trump administration believes can pave the way for re-opening the government.
News 5 will continue to bring you updates regarding the president’s announcement throughout the following days.
