(NBC News) President Donald Trump says he’s expecting progress in the next few days after weekend negotiations brought no breakthrough to end a partial government shutdown.
The president and Democrats are at odds over whether taxpayers should pay more than $5 billion for a wall at the Mexico border.
Democrats say Mr. Trump is showing no signs of budging on his border-wall demands, but the White House insists he’s compromising by offering to build the wall with steel, instead of concrete.
Mr. Trump is threatening to declare a national emergency to pay for the wall. If that happens, it would almost certainly prompt a legal challenge.
Right now, 800,000 federal employees and contractors are working without pay as we enter week three of the shutdown.
