(NBC News) The government shutdown still shows no sign of ending after the president and Congressional leaders emerged from a White House meeting Friday no closer to a deal.

“We cannot resolve this until we open up government. We’ve made that clear to the president,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

“We told the president we needed the government open,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer added. “He resisted. In fact he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.”

The president insists a deal to reopen government must include five billion dollars in funding for a border wall, calling it “a matter of national security.”

Mr. Trump also suggested if Congress doesn’t act he can declare an emergency and have the military build the wall.
