FOLLY BEACH, SC – The crystal is in place and ready to drop in New York City’s Time Square on Monday night, but while millions of Americans watch there, thousands will be watching the flip flop drop in Folly Beach.

It’s a South Carolina tradition started by Charlotte Goodwin, married to Folly’s mayor.

In its eighth year, the flip flop drop floods the local economy each year.

It’s a team effort between Folly Police and Folly Fire, hoisting the flip flops to the top of a fire truck for the big event.

But, why the flip flops?

“Well because folly beach is a beach town. We wear flip flops and just a close-knit little family,” finished Charlotte.
