Summary: Twas the night before Christmas, and all the through the region, patchy clouds pass through and temps stay average for the season. Stockings are hung by the chimney with care, and while dry through Christmas, ’tis possible Wednesday and particularly Friday, will require more care.

But it’s a silent night tonight, and a quiet Christmas Tuesday, as we await not one, but two storms that will impact the area Wednesday and then Friday. It is possible for some very fine snow to form literally overhead late Tuesday Night or early Wednesday, but it appears to get just warm enough, to change to a light rain Wednesday midday…only to change back to snow for good, Wednesday evening as the storm departs, dragging down much colder air. Another new storm in the Pacific will dive south into Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico Thursday, and carve out a swath of snow late Thursday night all the way through midday Saturday. Given how cold it will get during that time frame, not only will it be all snow, but the liquid-to-solid ratios will be so high, that the snow will be incredibly “fluffy”, and so will accumulate more readily than any snow Wednesday early and late. That second storm may have much more impact over a longer time frame.

Conditions across the Mountains, I-25 corridor, Plains

Meanwhile, it is all snow for the mountains, for both storms…and the further west or south you are or go, the more accumulating snow you will see. Snow in the mountains from midday Tuesday, through most of Wednesday, and then again Thursday night & Friday. Meanwhile, while it tapers to just flurries between systems Thursday for all, it’s possible that the Plains actually eek out some sun, between the storms.
