For the first time in more than two decades Monarch Mountain ski area opened before Thanksgiving. “We slept here last night,” said Crestone resident, Mahryan Vaux. The first lift rides of the season happened Friday morning.

It is a great start. It is thanks to a series of small storms adding to the base. “We got those few little storm cycles in and we were ready with the snow cats out there track packing and getting everything set. So should we get more snow it would have somewhere to stick,” said Monarch Mountain Marketing Manager, Hayley Houlihan.

“Absolutely a bonus they decided to open it up,” said opening day skier, Matt Presti. The mid November conditions get praise from skiers and boarders. “Oh, gorgeous out, blue bird skies and sun and good conditions,” said Catherine Siemit from Canon City.
