With cooler temperatures moving in, local charities are scrambling to collect winter wear for our neighbors in need.

Ecumenical Social Ministries in Colorado Springs, is holding a coat drive for the homeless and they need your help!

These coats mean the world to the people who receive them and News 5 spoke to one woman who says, when temperatures drop it’s that extra layer that makes all the difference.

“I didn’t have any winter gear,” explained Michelle Chapman.

Michele is no stranger to the cold. She’s been living in shelters and camping out on the streets for months.

“I was freezing and I had sweatshirts and a denim jacket,” said Michelle, “but I would get chilled through and start shaking after a couple hours.”

That’s when she turned to Ecumenical Social Ministries for some help.

“The weather just changed overnight,” said Michelle. “So I just came in and I needed a jacket.”

Luckily an earlier coat donation dropped off at doorstep was just what Michelle needed.

“Nothing penetrates this jacket,” said Michelle. “I haven’t been cold one time since I put this jacket on. I mean really it’s a life saver.”

You can drop off donations at ESM. It’s located downtown at 201 N. Weber St. Drop off hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
