A total of 1745 firefighters are working to contain the Spring Fire Monday morning. The fire has burned 107, 627 acres and is now 70% contained.

The north side of the fire continues to be a challenge for firefighters.

Officials say that favorable weather conditions over the weekend helped crews out with their operations along the eastern edge of the fire.

US 160 was re-opened over the weekend and residents were allowed to return to select areas. Structure protection specialists continue patrols in Trey Valles, Navajo Ranch and other areas.  People may see areas of smoke as some pockets continue to burn.  Highway 12 in the Cuchara Valley remains closed south of La Veta.

Colorado Highway 69 remains closed and portions of US Highway 160 may be closed at any time due to fire activity. Containment lines along a high ridge from Road 574 south along Strawberry Gulch to Highway 160 will see more firefighter presence as heavy equipment works to establish and improve lines.

As Huerfano and Costilla County managers have begun allowing some people access to their homes. Residents should call 2-1-1 for current information about evacuations and re-entry to their homes.

Parts of the San Isabel National Forest remain closed by Forest Order to all recreational visitors. For information, please contact the San Carlos Ranger District of the Pike & San Isabel National Forests at (719) 553-1400.
