Campgrounds near Devil’s Head re-opened following shooting investigation

Thursday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced that all road and campsites near Devil’s Head have re-opened following their investigation of a shooting that occurred Monday, July 2nd.

That day, a camper shot an "armed and dangerous" carjacking suspect who deputies said shot at passing cars along Rampart Range Road.

Deputies said a 29-year-old man was driving a stolen car out of El Paso County through the Pike National Forest when he stopped at the Devil’s Head campground and approached a camper with a rifle.

That’s when deputies said the camper returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

The camper and the suspect’s identity have not been released. The Douglas County Sheriff;’s Office said the suspect is in stable condition and no other people were injured. 

Multiple agencies, including the Manitou Springs Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call. 

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect will face charges in El Paso County and Douglas County. They said those charges will likely be attempted murder and felony menacing. 

All campsites from Devil’s Head and south were closed while authorities investigated the incident.
