Suspect sustains multiple gunshot wounds in incident on Rampart Range Rd

A camper fired shots at an "armed and dangerous" suspect involved in an attempted carjacking on Rampart Range Road Monday afternoon.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a report from a victim that was traveling on Rampart Range Road, when they were flagged down by a white man in his 20-30s, who reportedly had a blown out rear tire on a blue Mazda station wagon. 

The victim told deputies they sped away when they noticed the man had a gun. The suspect reportedly got back in the car and approached two other victims with a weapon on Rampart Range Road. The second victim said the suspect fired shots in their direction, the third victim said the suspect pulled the trigger but the gun didn’t go off, according to the sheriff’s office. 

The suspect reportedly continued driving and fired shots at passing cars until he stopped near Devils Head Campground. Deputies said the suspect approached a camper with a rifle and a confrontation ensued. 

The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital. He is in stable condition, but is identity is not yet being released.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect will face charges out of Douglas and El Paso County, likely including Felony Menacing and Reckless Endangerment.

Multiple agencies assisted in the incident, the investigation is ongoing.
