The Colorado State Patrol identified the two people who died in separate crashes Tuesday on I-25 north of Pueblo.

The first crash happened a little after 10:30 a.m. when troopers said 21-year-old Jose Luna Duran from Valvillo, Mexico jumped from a Jeep Wrangler heading northbound and was hit by a tractor trailer.

Duran was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the semi truck was not hurt. Troopers said alcohol and drug use are not considered factors in the crash, but the incident is still under investigation.

That crash caused a backup, which led to another fatal crash a little more than two hours later several miles south of the scene of the first accident.

Warning signs were posted advising drivers to slow down for the accident ahead, but a semi truck plowed into the slow-moving traffic and hit multiple cars and another semi.

Troopers said 61-year-old Steven Aikman was killed, and several other drivers were taken to area hospitals.

This caused both directions of the interstate to close, with northbound lanes closed until about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

CSP did not identify the driver of the semi truck that hit the other vehicles.

Authorities said charges are pending as the investigation into the crash continues.
