Dangerous travel into the high country this weekend

Travel into the mountains became nearly impossible Friday due to the winter storm.

The snow total forecast in the mountains, for between one and three feet, was verified.

That's great news for ski conditions, at least in a day or two.

Loveland Ski Area did not open Friday because of the storm. Steamboat, Copper Mountain, and Arapahoe Basin all experienced wind-related lift closures as well.

Avalanche warnings remain in place until 8 p.m. Saturday for the Front Range, Vail & Summit County Steamboat and the Flat Tops, Aspen, the Sawatch Range, and Gunnison regions.

Avalanche mitigation is taking place through Monarch Pass.

Just after 11 a.m. Friday westbound I-70 closed from Golden to the Eisenhower Tunnel. It's expected to be slow-going in that area through the weekend.

So far Highway 50 and Highway 24 have remained open during this storm.
