Local teams battle in Sweet 16 Tuesday

Several of Southern Colorado's top girls basketball teams in Class 4A & 5A took the court for the Sweet 16 Tuesday night.

In a major upset, No. 16 Canon City took down No. 1 seed Sand Creek, 69-55 in a 4A tilt.

No. 2 Pueblo West took care of business, cruising past No. 15 George Washington, 52-37.

Decided in the final minutes, No. 11 Sierra rallied to take down No. 6 Thompson Valley, 44-40.

Air Academy and Falcon saw their solid seasons ends in the round of 16 as well. The Kadets fell to Holy Family, 42-27, with the Falcons dropping a 58-42 contest at Berthoud.

In Class 5A, Doherty hung tough but were ultimately knocked off by Fruita Monument, 51-39 in Grand Junction.

The Great 8 is set to take place Friday night, with tip-offs beginning at 6 and 7 p.m.
