COLORADO SPRINGS — Despite losing nearly two dozen seniors, the Discovery Canyon football team looked the part Thursday night, topping Mitchell 48-14 in the season opener at Garry Berry Stadium.
Falling behind 6-0 early, the Thunder scored 48 of the next 56 points to cruise to the victory.
Senior tailbacks Ayden Emmons and Michael Hanna led the way for DCC, each compiling a rushing touchdown in the win.
"I'm super grateful, we didn't think we were going to have a season and now we have a season," Emmons said. "We could come back out with our friends, so it's fun."
The defense also did its part with two pick-6's against the Marauders offense.
On a night where Pine Creek and Pueblo South joined Widefield as local programs set to miss their first game due to COVID-19 concerns, head coach Shawn Mitchell was just happy to get their 2020 season underway.
"We're going to have to navigate all of that and understand that's the way the season is going to go," Mitchell said. "We got one in, hopefully, we can get the other five."
