The show that taught us all to sing “Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy” is coming back to TV.

“The Ren & Stimpy Show,” the offbeat animated series that debuted on Nickelodeon in 1991, will return with new episodes on Comedy Central as part of that network’s attempt at renewing a string of 1990s cult cartoon classics. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there aren’t many details about the pair’s new adventures yet, not even an expected premiere date or episode count.

For the uninitiated, “The Ren & Stimpy Show” followed the wacky exploits of a chihuahua named Ren and a cat named Stimpy. The show was praised by critics for its unique animation style and surreal sense of humor that was often considered too racy for the young audience at Nickelodeon. It ran for five seasons before ending its original run.

It introduced the world to such colorful characters as Mr. Horse, Powdered Toast Man and Muddy Mudskipper, as well as showing us the wonderful fun that can be had by playing with a toy log.

The title characters came back in 2003 in a new series on Spike TV that abandoned any guise of being made for kids. “Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon” included some episodes of the original show that had been banned by Nickelodeon’s censors as well as new ones, all in a more vulgar tone. That show only lasted a few episodes before it was nixed.

In addition to bringing back “The Ren & Stimpy Show,” The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Comedy Central has ordered revivals of animated MTV favorites “Beavis and Butt-Head” and “Daria.” The latter show will come back in the form of a spin-off called “Jodie,” which will star Tracee Ellis Ross as the title character, who was a friend of Daria in the original series.

Comedy Central’s new “Beavis and Butt-Head” has been called a “reimagining” of the Generation X favorite by the network.

No premiere date has been announced for any of the new cartoons.
