PUEBLO, Colo. (KOAA) — Pueblo City Council members voted to pass a resolution requiring local retailers to pay for abandoned shopping carts.

The resolution passed on a 5-2 vote.

Under the new resolution, businesses would pay a $35 fee for each cart found off their property. They would also pay $2 a day for storage.

The city says the base fees could add up to $95 per cart, and retailers could also face a $50 surcharge for repeat offenses.

Stores can avoid the fees this year if they install a cart management system, and fees collected before December 31, 2026 would be considered to be waived according to the resolution.

The resolution takes effect immediately.
