Police are advising people to write out the full year with 2020 upon us.

Abbreviated versions can easily be altered, police warned. For instance, the date 1/2/20 can be altered to read 1/2/2017 or 1/2/2019 or some other year by adding two digits.

"This is very sound advice and should be considered when signing any legal or professional document," the East Millinocket Police Department in Maine wrote on Facebook. "It could potentially save you some trouble down the road."
