A 4-month-old girl died Tuesday after being left in a car outside a Phoenix school district building for several hours.

Phoenix firefighters were called to the scene just before 4 p.m.

When crews arrived on scene at the Washington Elementary School District facility, the child was beyond any resuscitative efforts and was pronounced dead, Phoenix Fire Captain Rob McDade said.

Police say the child's foster or adoptive father is and administrator at the building.

Authorities say around 7 a.m., the man went to drop off his kids at daycare, went to work for a few hours and then left to pick up the 4-month-old for an appointment. He then drove back to work and left the girl in car. Officers say when he went to leave around 3:30 p.m., he found the child in the car.

Police say the man and his wife are parents of adoptive and foster children.

It is unclear at this time if charges will be filed, according to Phoenix Police Detective Luis Samudio.
