DENVER — A portion of Interstate 70 closed Friday evening and will remain so through Monday morning as the Colorado Department of Transportation continues to work on the Central 70 Project.
Both directions of I-70 were closed between Interstate 270 and Steele Street/Vasquez Boulevard in Denver at 10 p.m. Fridayb until Monday at 5 a.m.
Crews will use this time to set girders for the replacement bridge at Colorado Boulevard over I-70, CDOT said. They will also begin the I-270 bridge demolition.

This full-weekend closure, which was scheduled around Broncos home games to avoid worse traffic jams, will allow the crews to complete work in a few days that could have otherwise taken months of nightly lane closures, CDOT said.
If you plan to drive on this stretch of I-70 this weekend, here’s what you need to know:
- If you’re headed westbound: You will enter northbound I-270. Use the off-ramp to go to westbound I-76. Take southbound I-25 and exit onto westbound I-70.
- If you’re headed eastbound: You will enter northbound I-25. Use the off-ramp to go to eastbound I-76 and then take southbound I-270. Exit onto I-70.
The Central 70 Project has multiple goals, including reconstructing a 10-mile stretch of the interstate, adding a new express land in each direction, removing an aging viaduct and lowering the interstate between Brighton and Colorado Boulevards.
