GREELEY, Colo. — Lightning may have sparked a fire during service at a Greeley church Sunday evening.

More than 180 people were inside Faith Tabernacle Church when the fire started, Greeley Fire Battalion Chief Robert Fries said. But everyone made it out safely.

Firefighters responded around 8 p.m. to the Church located at 7001 West 28th Street.

The blaze had started in the church's attic but quickly progressed to a second-alarm fire soon after crews arrived, Fries said.

Firefighters had the fire under control later in the evening and would be working on putting out hot spots into the overnight hours.

The extent of damage to the building is unknown.

Witnesses in the area observed a lightning strike near the church, but the origin and cause of the fire are currently under investigation, the department said.
