AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (KOAA) — The U.S. Air Force Academy has a new commandant of cadets. Colonel Brandon Tellez took over the role Friday morning during the change of command ceremony.

He is the 32nd commandant in the history of the academy.

Colonel Tellez replaces Brigadier General Gavin Marks, who is retiring this summer after serving in the role since 2023.

During Friday's ceremony, Colonel Tellez spoke about the mission of the academy.

"This entire institution exists to take forth our very best in this country, our finest, our tributes, and through 47 months of combined effort, make you what we need to preserve that delicate thing, that peace," said Colonel Tellez.

Colonel Tellez is a 2001 graduate of the academy.

Before taking this new role, he served as senior executive officer to the Air Force vice chief of staff.
