Adams County sheriff: Man fled from deputies, fired at them from allegedly stolen vehicle

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A man who had been fleeing from Adams County deputies in an allegedly stolen vehicle died Friday morning after firing at the deputies who were in pursuit.

Paul Gregory with the Adams County Sheriff's Office said the shooting occurred near Peterson Road/County Road 29 and E. Colfax Avenue neat Watkins around 7:10 a.m.

Deputies attempted to stop the driver of the allegedly stolen vehicle by a Shell truck stop in Watkins. The driver, who was identified only as an adult male by deputies early Friday evening, was a wanted person, the sheriff's office said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the suspect driver fled in the stolen vehicle while firing multiple rounds at deputies, the sheriff's office said.

The pursuit ended around E. Colfax Avenue and Peterson Road in Watkins. The suspect was struck by sheriff's office gunfire and was transported to a hospital. The sheriff's office said the suspect died of his or her injuries.

No deputies were injured, Gregory said.

Colfax Avenue at Manila Road was closed as authorities investigated.
