CANON CITY — Over in Cañon City, the Shepperly family is using their petting zoo as medicine for the soul, bringing smiles and making memories for those that visit as well as providing education to those that pass through regarding the proper care of animals.

The petting zoo boasts a population of 129 animals, not counting the constantly growing population of bunnies and chicks, and consists of everything from miniature donkeys and horses, to chickens, rabbits, goats, two precious wallabies and more.

The Wallabies, maybe the show stoppers of the operation, are named Penny and Jude in tribute to the Beatles songs of the same name.

The family run farm started as a way for Ashley and Jason Shepperly to teach their children sustainable living as well as the proper care of and respect for animals.

According to the family, after many neighbors took interest in the operation, they decided to open their doors as a full petting zoo.

Our goal is to provide people with a better understanding of the animals with hands on animal education and knowledge on how to better care for animals. But most of all, we want Shepperly Farm to be a place where you can relax and soak in all the love that our animals truly love to receive and give.

All proceeds from the business go back to caring for, housing, and feeding the animals.

Currently the family is working to use a large portion of the proceeds to build an enclosure for their two wallabies.
