LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — A man was shot by a Larimer County Sheriff's Office deputy while he was driving a stolen patrol cruiser Monday morning. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 2:45 a.m. Monday, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said a deputy made a traffic stop near the intersection of Prospect Road and Riverside Avenue in Fort Collins. The driver got out of the car, as instructed by the deputy. Then the passenger got into the driver's seat and drove away. Deputies followed with lights on and sirens blaring, but the man continued driving for several miles through north Fort Collins. He then crashed the car into a ditch at the intersection of Terry Lake Road and Highway 1.

The suspect got out of the car he was driving and approached deputies with a knife, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. The suspect got into one of the deputy's patrol cruisers that was left unoccupied and began driving around deputies.

One of the deputies shot and hit the suspect. At which point, deputies were able to approach the cruiser and get the suspect out of the car. They provided medical treatment to the suspect before he was taken to the hospital.

Highway 1 closed from Gregory Road to Country Club Road in Larimer County for the investigation into what happened. That's approximately 8 to 9 miles south of Wellington, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
