Victim identified in fatal New Year's Day stabbing in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS — The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a fatal stabbing that happened on New Year's Day in downtown Colorado Springs.

Police said they responded to a building in the 400 block of E. Bijou St. around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 67-year-old Peter Walker.

Walker was taken to the hospital to be treated, but officers said he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

CSPD said 45-year-old John Winters was taken into custody for second degree murder charges.

Police said Walker's death is the first homicide in Colorado Springs this year.
