Two suspected of conspiracy to commit sexual assault, murder in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs police arrested two men accused of plotting to sexually assault and murder a victim Monday afternoon.

According to police, they received a call around 2:09 p.m. from someone who said they overheard two people "planning on sexually assaulting and killing the victim." The victim was able to lock themselves in a bedroom and call police while the suspects tried to get into the room.

Police arrived to the residence in the 1200 block of Potter Drive, near Mitchell High School, where they arrested 31-year-old Hugo Mendoza Hernandez and 32-year-old Agustin Easebio Melandres after one tried to escape from the home.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police said they also recovered two weapons and other evidence from the home. Both were Hernandez and Agustin were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit sexual assault and conspiracy to commit murder.
