Suspect identified in officer-involved shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS — Police in Colorado Springs have identified the suspect in an officer-involved shooting this week on East Fountain Blvd.

Police say Joshua Vigil, 38, died after he was injured in the shooting.

Officers were called to the 2200 block of Monterey Road around 5:45 Tuesday night after a report that a suspicious man was walking in the area with a gun.

When officers tried to approach the man he got into a vehicle and left the scene. Officers did not follow him, but a short time later three officers found the suspect, identified as Vigil, in the 3100 block fo East Fountain.

During the encounter with Vigil at least one officer fired a shot.

Vigil was taken to the hospital where he died from his injures.

The officers involved were not injured and were placed on administrative leave according to CSPD policy.

The Coroner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death in the case.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting, and says the investigation is ongoing.
