State Patrol investigating fatal motorcycle crash in Custer County

CUSTER COUNTY — Colorado State Patrol is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon in Custer County.

According to State Patrol, a man on a 2020 Harley Davidson was traveling on Highway 165 when he failed to negotiate a turn.

Both the bike and the rider went off the side of the road and down an embankment.

State Patrol said the rider fell down the embankment until he struck a boulder and came to rest.

The rider has been identified as 49-year-old Michael Van Winkle of Aurora. State Patrol said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as contributing factors in the crash at this time, according to State Patrol.
