The well advertised arctic blast is on its way to the state. But, this cold dense air is also shallow, so the most frigid conditions will remain in the eastern plains this weekend. More "mild" temperatures are expected in the mountains Friday and Saturday, but still expect to stay below freezing in the high country. Sunday will be cold for everyone in the state.
The incoming cold also is accompanied by an active jet stream, which will bring multiple rounds of snow to the mountains. Steady snow is likely Thursday through Saturday. The most energetic wave will move in early Sunday.
Plan for passenger vehicle chain laws to be in place for at least some portion of the weekend. Have the snow tires or chains handy and keep some emergency supplies in your car in case of road closures.
Weekend snow forecast totals by region:
San Juans: 15-30"
Sawatch Range: 5-15"
Gunnison and Aspen region: 12-24"
Vail & Summity County: 8-15"
Steamboat & northern mountains: 12-24"
