Armed suspect arrested in Cheyenne Wells, shelter-in-place advisory lifted

CHEYENNE WELLS — The Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office said authorities arrested an armed man suspected of firing a shot at a neighboring home Wednesday morning in Cheyenne Wells.

Authorities raided a home off of Highway 40 following an hours-long standoff that began around 8:43 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies first received a report about a gunshot fired into a neighboring home around 6:30 a.m. Deputies responded to investigate at 8:43 a.m., when they encountered the suspect. Authorities said the man was armed and fired at least one shot. Hours later, authorities eventually raided the home around 4:30 p.m. and found the suspect alive, but unresponsive.

He was taken to the hospital after the standoff with an unspecified injury. No bystanders or law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

U.S. Highway 385 and U.S. Highway 40 have since reopened in the area.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office received support from the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, Kit Carson County Sheriff's Office, Kiowa County Sheriff's Office, Burlington Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Transportation and the Coloardo Department of Public Safety during the ordeal.

Cheyenne Wells is just west of the Kansas border and approximately 130 miles east of Colorado Springs.
