Shawnee Peak Fire burning in remote wilderness area near Bailey

PARK COUNTY — A wildfire dubbed the Shawnee Peak Fire is burning in a remote area of national forest in Park County.

The blaze is burning in timber about five or six miles southwest of Bailey. This is near Shawnee Peak, east of Kenosha Pass, in the Lost Creek Wilderness Area.

According to the US Forest Service, the fire was first reported around 3:15 Monday afternoon and is estimated at 37 acres at the time of this writing.

The USFS said three hotshot crews two Type 2 IA crews and multiple engines form the Forest Service and the Platte Canyon Fire Department are responding. Two Type 3 helicopters are also working the fire. Additional helicopters have been ordered and are expected to be on scene Tuesday morning.

Two additional hand crews will also be on the scene Tuesday morning.

Containment is zero at this time, but no structures are threatened as the fire is in a remote wilderness area.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
