PUEBLO WEST — Groups are giving prairie dogs in Pueblo West a new home.
U.S. Fish and WIldlife along with CSU Pueblo and Colorado Department of Transportation are working to move the animals to the Pueblo Chemical Depot.
For the last couple of weeks, the groups have been trapping prairie dogs near the Pueblo West Walmart.
The reason for this is to regrow the prairie dog population near the depot since many of them have died from the plague in 2016.
"It is very fulfilling. This is one of the reasons I became a conversationalist biologist, to conserve important species to the grassland eco-systems," said postdoctoral researcher Dr. Elizabeth Peterson.
Another reason for moving the prairie dogs is CDOT has a project it wants to do by the Pueblo West Walmart.
