COLORADO SPRINGS — Drivers on northbound I-25 will follow a detour near North Gate Boulevard as crews start to work on the Powers Boulevard Interchange overnight Tuesday.
Construction crews will begin work at 7 p.m. Tuesday near Interquest Parkway where only two lanes will be open. Then there will be just one lane open starting at 9 p.m.
The detour will allow crews to build two new bridges and off-ramps for the Powers interchange.
Detours will last until this summer with a southbound I-25 detour in the area currently being built.
All three lanes near Interquest Parkway will be open Wednesday by 6 a.m.
For the rest of the project, there will be occasional overnight lane closures but overall minimal traffic impacts.
Leaders in Colorado Springs say the interchange project is a critical piece of transportation for people in the city and that big changes need to be made to keep cars and revenue flowing.
The project will bring a four-lane divided highway, two lanes in each direction, between I-25 and Voyager Parkway, six major bridges and more.
The project team says the goal is to have the construction completed in spring of 2021.
