BUENA VISTA — A plane taking off from Buena Vista airport hit the runway and burst into flames Tuesday, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said they were notified before 2 p.m. that the single-engine plane was about to be airborne when it hit the runway and caught on fire.

The pilot of the plane was able to escape after the aircraft settled off of the runway. The pilot's name has not been released, but deputies said the pilot was airlifted to a regional burn center to be treated.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were both notified and will investigate this incident.
