Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Monument

MONUMENT — Investigators say a suspect who barricaded himself inside a home in Monument was killed in a shooting with police.

Monument police were called to 2nd Street and Beacon Lite around 3 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of someone shooting a pellet gun at pedestrians and vehicles.

They arrived and found several vehicles had been hit, and the suspect shut himself inside a residence.

Police requested help from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office SWAT team and while they were trying to get in contact with the suspect he fired shots, striking an El Paso County cruiser.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Investigators said that while attempting to make contact, an El Paso County deputy fired at the suspect and struck him.

No one else was injured.

Several streets in downtown Monument were closed for most of the night.

The deputies involved were uninjured and have been place on routine administrative leave in accordance with police.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and is identify will be released after the Coroner's Office makes a positive identification and next of kin is notified.

Law enforcement has not indicated what type of weapon the suspect was firing.
