CUSTER COUNTY — An Air Force officer who was reported overdue while while hiking in the Sangre de Cristo mountains has died.

Custer County Search and Rescue says a Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control helicopter located the remains of Lt. Colonel Dan Wallick. Due to the difficult terrain they were not recovered until Sunday.

Wallick, who was from Salida, was stationed at Schriever Air Force Base.

On Wednesday, July 24, Saguache County received a 911 call reporting him overdue in the Kit Carson Peak/Challenger Point area. Wallick had planned to summit both peaks and a family member said he never returned home.

A cause of death has not yet been released.
