COLORADO SPRINGS — James Papol has pleaded guilty to several counts in the 1988 murder of a woman in Colorado Springs.

As part of a plea deal, Papol pleaded to second-degree murder and was charged as an adult in the death of 24-year-old Mary Lynn Vialpando.

Papol was 15 at the time the crime occurred.

In 2018, DNA evidence was discovered that linked him to the crime.

In 2019, Papol was sent to undergo evaluation at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo after he entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Papol will be sentenced on May 5 and faces several decades in prison.
