Local YMCA providing free meals, phone calls to seniors

COLORADO SPRINGS — The Pikes Peak are YMCA is still helping out seniors despite being closed due to COVID-19.

The YMCA is offering free meal pickup on Mondays between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the senior center on North Hancock Avenue in Colorado Springs. So far, they have given out more than 400 meals. Some of the meals are delivered by staff to those that are shut in.

The staff is also manning the phones.

"We have called 9,000 older adults in our association to check in on them. These phone calls may take two minutes or they may take 20 minutes depending on each individual's needs," Mary Swantek said

The YMCA said they will continue providing these services as long as they're needed.
